This system, characterized by important environmental and societal changes, is part of the largest transboundary conservation area in the world, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kavangozambezi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KAZA TFCA<\/a> (Kavango-Zambezi Trans-Frontier Conservation Area).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/Accueil_1_map-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1015\" src=\"http:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/Accueil_1_map-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/Accueil_1_map-1.jpg 592w, https:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/Accueil_1_map-1-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to contribute to <strong>a better conservation-development interface<\/strong>, the research programme conducted in Hwange (initially known as the HERD programme) focuses on the interactions between the near-natural ecosystem and the human society. Benefiting from more than 20 years of experience, this programme was awarded the status of a &#8220;Zone Atelier&#8221; (France&#8217;s Long Term Socio-Ecological Research) by the INEE (Institute for Ecology and Environment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNRS<\/a>) in 2011. The programme has two main objectives:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> In a context of global change and erosion of biodiversity, we aim at understanding the responses of a savanna ecosystem, particularly its exceptional diversity of large mammals, to climate change and anthropogenic pressure for a better management \/ conservation of natural communities, and ultimately for a better ecosystem functioning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> In a socio-ecosystem comprising a protected area and subject to climatic uncertainties and major societal changes, we seek to understand how conservation areas can provide and sustain services to the entire socio-ecosystem, and hence allow a better coexistence between the protected area and its periphery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/zebras.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1017\" src=\"http:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/zebras-1024x680.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/zebras-1024x680.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/zebras-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/zebras-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/www.za-hwange.cnrs.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/zebras.png 1355w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hwange LTSER hosts a long-term interdisciplinary research project to understand the dynamics of a savanna socio-ecosystem, Hwange National Park (~ 15000 km\u00b2) and its periphery, located on the western border of Zimbabwe.
